Red Eyes

This diary-style Medical English example can be read alongside the recording below.

Hi Paul,

Doctors are the worst patients, as you have always stressed.

I wonder if you could give me a piece of advice.

My eyes are red and awfully itchy.

The red eye with different backgrounds, as I’m sure you can recall, is a frequent question at finals.

I just pondered. I definitely avoid swimming pools, being petrified of infections such as conjunctivitis. So that’s not an option.

Goggles do not help prevention, in my opinion.

Some people apply those tweezers on their noses and hope it will stop pharyngitis and sinusitis.

As a young man, I frequently had bad bouts of diarrhoea.

The possibility of inflammatory bowel disease was always considered.

Is it episcleritis?

I have frequent headaches. Is this possibly an attack of glaucoma?

I was seen by the optometrist when I had new glasses made, and the pressure of both my eyes was deemed normal.

Anyway, please contact me as soon as possible.

I will apply some symptomatic treatment in the meantime.

You may think I’m too anxious about a minor symptom, but you can’t help being yourself.
