Volume 9

Pull Push

When I was a child I can remember there were gates or small doors which served as an entrance to shops. Later on swinging doors then rolling ones occured. Also pearls on a string rattling when you passed them.

Doors opening automatically if you cross a beam of infrared light have been in use for at least three decades by now.

Doors operated by a machine or photocells can go wrong, earlier doors got stuck time and again. That was not an easy task to fix either, joiners might have worked on it for about an hour.

If you are not a DIY man, it may be a difficult task to find a real artisan and also costly.

If a key gets stuck in a lock that is a nightmare at least for people like me.

But no worries 24/7 services are available. These services may charge you a lot of money especially at night or over the weekend.

Pay your bill at the bar

Pubs operate with a pay as you go system in the UK. It makes things easier as there is usually a big crowd around especially over the weekend. Pay as you go means that you pay to the bartender at the till right away when your drinks are served. Service is usually included so tipping is not a must as it used to be.

Empty mugs are collected by the personnel on a regular basis.

Smoking is not allowed in pubs any more so a large group of people usually stand in the middle of the road on a Friday and Saturday night chatting around with a cigarette in their hands. A lot of them vape instead.

Posh restaurants ban smoking within a certain radius around the place.

Once in Barcelona I was sitting on the balcony with a friend and he was smoking. A woman from a nearby house rang at the door. She said she was pregnant and the wind blew the smoke into her flat. In a situation like that there is nothing you can say in Western Europe. We were standing in the street for 30 minutes as my friend wanted to continue smoking.
